The Collection

The ‘Collection’ consists of images that I did not take myself, but are in keeping with the story I’m telling on this website, and I hope more will be added as time permits. The ‘Home’ page features the latest individual additions, so returners can distinguish what is new without having to trawl the pages, and the ‘Sightings’ page lists summaries of those pages.

Pictures taken by myself in ‘The Gallery’ are my copyright – the others form ‘The Collection’, most of which I purchased believing they are sole originals, and now my property, but as they have been obtained second-hand, I cannot be 100% certain. Images in the collection are marked ‘ERIC CURNOW COLLECTION’ where they have been obtained as “originals”, or copyright has been emphatically passed on, but where there is no marking, I am uncertain. You reproduce these further at your own risk: I myself suspect that it would only be a problem in exceptional circumstances, and that in most cases the photographer would be pleased that his handiwork was being appreciated more widely. Certainly they give pleasure to more people than never seeing the light of day, on the off chance that the photographer might object!

I have used a few archive photographs that have copyright markings, but I’ve been unable to find the photographer (not surprising as he would have to be 70+!) or anyone who now holds copyright of those images. If you are the photographer/owner of any image, please let me know so I can credit you; and if you believe any image is your copyright and are not happy with its inclusion, I will certainly remove it. All that have copyright markings are so credited in the caption.

Feel free to use my images from this site for personal use, but please do not remove my name from them, and be sure to credit any original photographer where I have. They should not be ‘published’ without specific permission from me – particularly on digital platforms where they may be uncontrollably forwarded to others. In one or two instances, the copyright owner has granted permission to me, but not necessarily other people, so where this applies you will need to make a fresh application to them.

The photographs are grouped by topics like “location” or “locomotive class” – the sort of categorisation familiar to railway enthusiasts. The versions on this website are low-resolution gifs – not suitable for publication – but I have up to A4 size 300dpi scans from the originals that have had blemishes removed and enhanced where appropriate, if required for book reproduction.
